Swound! are more bonkers than Amy Winehouse on a crack binge. ‘What’s Your Poison?’ starts off with the refrain “if a shark stops swimming it dies” and it gets more weird and bizarre as the EP progresses. If this band of brothers isn’t hooked on some weird fucked up mushrooms I want to know what they do take. ‘Hello Future…’ is just weird – kind of liked a fucked up The Misnomer. There’s a very distinct Britishness in the vocal delivery and that’s refreshing and, underneath all the oddness, there are catchy choruses and handclaps bursting to get out. ‘Hey Women’, for instance, is hardly conventional yet strip away the layers and you have a great little song.
Some of the larger music magazines are already proclaiming Swound! as the next big thing and their quirky side will certainly make them stand out from the pack. And I do see why a lot of people could like them, I just think it’s a bit too out there and a bit too weird at times. Still, they’re unique, original and clearly don’t take themselves too seriously and they are all very good traits. Swound! stand out – and when bands try and play it safe way too much, way too often, they deserve credit and plaudits even if the music isn’t destined for daytime Radio 1.
