Stupid Stupid Stupid and Steve – S/T

By paul

Terrible, terrible name apart, SSS+S (for short) aren’t too bad. Truth be told they’re not really my thing, but the very impressive brass section really holds this band together. This EP is made up of four pretty similar songs, all verse/chorus/verse, albeit the band are pretty strong at each one. Opener ‘The Drinking Song’ is a pretty silly shopping list style song that reels off a stack of drinks the band obviously enjoy consuming, but if you look beyond the slightly daft lyrical content the band are musically talented.

It’s something you could say about all of their songs really – ‘Stranded At The Bar’ (I see a drinking theme here…) is again solid, while closer ‘Texas Hold Up’ is catchy and memorable, although it’s again held together by the brass section who take this band beyond the below-average barrier and on to the better-than-average grade. SSS+S aren’t really my thing to be honest, but if you like your ska bands then this mob may be another one you want to check out.
