Strung Out – Agents Of The Underground

By paul

‘Blackhawks Over Los Angeles’ polarised opinions. It was one of those records that split fans – you loved it or hated it; it was one of those albums that put you in the ‘the band must play it fast’ camp or ‘the band can do no wrong’ camp. It was undoubtedly slower than some of their earlier work, but that didn’t make it a bad album. Still, those who expected something quicker and ore technical were left a little unfulfilled – and I suspect they may do the same this time around.

‘Agents Of The Underground’ sounds like the album that should have come before ‘Blackhawks…’ It’s the album that links the two sides of the band. It’s not so much quicker or more technical than the last full-length, but it’s less poppy and melodic. ‘Black Crosses’ and ‘Vanity’ don’t quite have the spit and venom of yesteryear, but there’s still some awesome guitar work and while mildly toned down, Jason’s vocals are still great. The only problem I have is that a couple of songs plod along a little bit and get lost amongst the better songs. Those tracks are few and far between though.

The simple end to this review is that if you liked the last record, you will like this too. Those who like a faster, more technical Strung Out may not like it. And the casual fan? Worth a listen but nothing to blow you away.
