Strike.Fire.Fall – Still Life

By paul

Strike.Fire.Fall would quite like to be Over It. It’s hardly surprising really, having signed to Takeover Records, the imprint of ex-Yellowcard guitarist Ben, who himself is former labelmates with the Virginia crew. S.F.F actually won a ‘win a record deal’ competition with Takeover in 2004 and this album is their first release for the label – except it’s s bit disappointing. While there’s clearly ability in abundance, I can’t believe this is the best talent Takeover could find in a nationwide talent search.

The production on this record isn’t the greatest. The vocals sound a bit low in the mix and at times the lead guitar is highest. When riffs are peeled off, as they are in ‘Cadillac’, the Over It comparisons are pretty obvious. But the hooks and melodies are nowhere near as strong as they should be, leaving you left to wonder exactly what the band are trying to achieve. There are some decent songs, but for me none of them are excellent. ‘Awkward Pose’ is clever, especially with a strong lead riff, but too many tracks are merely decent, without hinting they have what it takes to be great.
