Stevie and the Moon – These Old Traditions

By paul

Stevie and the Moon is the solo project of Stevie McCrorie. I’ve known Stevie for a little while now and always enjoyed his other bands and this solo project, while a little move away from the indie-rock of his other guises, is still very good. It’s mostly stripped down acoustic rock with the focus on his very powerful, and very Scottish, vocal. One thing you could never say about Stevie is that when he sings he’s very honest, passionate and true to his roots. If you think Biffy Clyro in terms of vocal delivery and the way the accent shines through and you won’t be a million miles off.

‘These Old Traditions’ is a very, very solid EP. It’s the kind of EP you can imagine being played on daytime Radio 2 and getting him picked up by a much bigger label. It’s not exactly ‘punktastic’ in sound, but I can imagine a lot of people who enjoy good old fashioned rock songs will like this record. Opener ‘Old Traditions’ is a fantastic song, while the full band ‘We Take It Out’ showcases just how good Stevie’s vocals are. There’s no doubt the vocals are the biggest instrument – and best weapon in his arsenal – and he uses it to full effect on each and every song. Whether you’re a fan of this type of music or not you cannot deny this is impressive stuff indeed.
