Spycatcher – Rock Is Cursed EP

By paul

The cynic in me says that Spycatcher‘s recent The Get Up Kids support and their other ‘high profile’ slots simply come about because they’re well connected – there are enough ex-members of UK acts in this band to really suggest Spycatcher are a super-group living off the reputations of their day-jobs. That would perhaps be a little unfair. ‘Rock Is Cursed’ is a decent first effort. At times this record is very much saved by the riffs, which are heavy, catchy and pretty fucking good. The vocals will split people down the middle – certainly an acquired taste, I found them to be more palatable on record than I did when I saw them live. There’s a bit of a Biffy/Foos vibe at times, more in the way that both bands focus on the guitars and the riffs more than anything else. It’s not exactly groundbreaking stuff, but it’s decent nonetheless. Better than Gallows, Cry For Silence and other bands the guys are involved with? Maybe not…not yet anyway.
