You know the score: two similar bands release a split 7inch record and immeasurable hype and internet chit-chat ensues. It’s not uncommon that all that hyperbole is more often than not completely undeserving and the result is a no-effort slur of lazy vocals and sloppy mimics of songs that, let’s face it, no one cares about. Fortunately, this is definitely not the case when it comes to Cincinnati favourites MIXTAPES and Milwaukee’s own, DIRECT HIT!.
Direct Hit! kick off this pop-punk twinged power-posi release in a suitably fun fashion with ‘Werewolf Shame’. As sweet as sugar but with a somewhat bitter taste, this raw number is perfectly presented in a classic rough-around-the-edges DIY pop manner. Gang vocals litter the chorus, drawing some similarity to the ever-bearded pop-punk giants Four Year Strong. Thundering drums and slightly cheesy riffs crush together for the mightiest potential dancefloor domination since Pete Wentz retired his teenage haircut for the foreseeable future.
Textbook dual vocals bulk up Mixtape’s ‘I Was A Teenage Poltergeist’ alongside a relentless guitar hook infectious enough to put any pop giant to shame. Geeked out lyrics and girly vocals reminisce over greater times – the 90s, anyone? – with a handclap and an awkward solo and succeeds perfectly in honing the ideal punked out poppy sound. Aggressive yet timid, ‘I Was A Teenage Poltergeist’ is anthemic from start to finish.
This single may only include two unique tracks, but it’s a head on collision of happiness and hyperactivity from start to finish. The hype may just be worth it.
