There’s nothing too new in what So They Say do, they just happen to do it well. I guess you could put that down to Matt Squire’s impeccable production skills (that have helped Hit The Lights hit the, well, bright lights), which really light this record up. And yes, I am fully aware that it’s been out for quite some time now, I just haven’t had the chance to review it yet. So here it is…
So They Say are signed to Fearless records and play a melodic brand of emo rock, shiny in production and slick in sound. There are plenty of solid choruses and the band do what they do very well – I don’t think there’s a bad song here, although by the same token the number of truly standout songs can also be probably counted on one hand. ‘In Loving Memory Of’ and ‘Over-Exposed Photo’ are two really good songs mind you, featuring some realy solid two and three way vocal harmonies, and a really strong melody. And that’s what makes So They Say likeable – they don’t re-invent the wheel, they just stick to a tried and tested formula and it works. Sure, this isn’t the best record of the year (or last year), but it’s fun and enjoyable and one which should get you through a few months of listening.
