Deep Elm Records seems to be pumping out the releases of late, and one thing that’s certain with each offering is that you’re never sure what you’re going to get. The label really seems to be mixing it up at the moment. ‘I Found Myself Asleep’ is the label’s 150th release but this time it doesn’t really fit into Punktastic’s remit. Here’s a quickie review then.
She Bears is a six-piece based in Athens, Georgia (that’s in the USA, not Greece or the Eurasian located Democratic Republic). The band plays what can probably best be described as indie-rock. Actually, the press release sums it up nicely: “[Layered] with crushing piano melodies, powerful guitar work, subtle electronica, and diary-relatable lyrics.” There is a definite emphasis on orchestration here, and layered is most definitely the right word. At times the vocals let the musicianship down a little and to these, admittedly untrained, ears the 10 track album is a little too mundane or linear.
Cited as being for fans of Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse, if you like either you’ll probably get a lot out of ‘I Found Myself Asleep’.
