Sea Girls – ‘Under Exit Lights’

By Yasmin Brown

If someone had mentioned the name ‘Sea Girls’ in conversation this time two years ago, your response would likely have been a blank face and a quizzical, ‘”Who?”. Today, though, they’re one of the most anticipated bands on festival bills, their live performances always a clear highlight of any lineup – and these performances are nothing without some massive hits to act as the catalyst behind this band’s greatness.

With the release of Sea Girls’ second EP ‘Under Exit Lights’, they’re only adding to a catalogue of catchy indie bops (for lack of a better word) with six more tracks that lift you off your feet and encourage uninhibited singalongs in any given social situation.

Due to Sea Girls initially making their name across UK festivals, for many, this band will always represent summer – and while at the time of release our central heating may still be running our bills through the roof, you’ll find yourself thawing from the inside out as you make your way through this EP, until you can almost feel the sun rest on your skin.

Three of the EP’s tracks have been previewed in the live environment across the past year, as well as hitting radio and Spotify playlists aplenty, and so upon first listen you’ll find yourself smiling and nodding your head in happy recognition as the choruses of ‘Violet’, ‘Closer’, and ‘Ready for More’ kick in. With simple yet relatable lyrics pertaining to love sitting alongside massive build-ups and catchy as hell choruses, there’s really nothing to not adore here. The voice of front man Henry Camamile will wash over you like a rich wine, and the drum beats alone will pump the blood around your body as you embrace themes surrounding love, frustration, and self-acceptance.

These tracks might not be written with the intention of revolutionising music, but Sea Girls have tapped into something huge here, only further proven through their sold-out show at London’s Roundhouse this April – no mean feat for a band who haven’t even released a full-length record yet. As you reach the end of the EP, you’ll find yourself wondering whether Sea Girls are capable of putting out a song that’s made for anything other than being a number one hit. The answer, as it stands right now, is categorically ‘no’.
