Samoans – 4 track demo 2009

By paul

Samoans are a new band from Cardiff and this is their new 4-track demo. As a demo the intent of any band should be to showcase their talents and, most importantly, leave the listener wanting that bit more. Samoans do a very good job on both counts. It’s difficult to pin down the band’s sound; at times they maybe sound a little like Tellison, at others they’re a bit darker and more aggressive. At all times the songs are drenched in subtle melodies which make the band stand out from the pack. They’re a little bit like a less psychotic Rig Up explosive if you’re looking for another lazy comparison.

‘Apia’ has some wonderful dynamics and after only a few listens sounds brilliant. Ditto the crunchy ‘Neon Tentacle’ which has some pretty hard-hitting drums and a wonderful dual vocal delivery which sounds like two boxers slugging it out, blow-for-blow. And while ‘Rosario’ takes a little bit too much time to get going, when it does it’s a fine song. Plenty of people would love this band given the chance – don’t be afraid to give them a spin.
