Resonate – Our Primary Motives

By paul

Exeter’s Resonate sound like they recorded ‘Our Primary Motives’ in a dustbin, but tha rather edgy, tinny sound actually adds to the appeal. The trio are just 17 but their Biffy Clro meets Kids Near Water din is already making waves locally and, on the strength of this 4-tracker, could make a ripple effect further afield in no time at all. Whereas the vocals are a little rough around the edges, something I’m not usually a fan of, it seems to work really well here. The guitars and bass collide nicely and the songs build up into fantastic little crescendos. ‘Razor Sharp Paper Thin’, the record’s opening song, is a really strong way of starting things off.

The bass heavy ‘Dragonflies Dynamite and Slingshot Attacks’ also impresses, while ‘The Funniest Jokes Are The Ones That…’ builds up really nice, showing a musical maturity far beyond their relatively young years. There are mistakes and this recording is a little rough, but what Resonate must be congratulated for is the fact they are not afraid to try and push the envelope a little. They refuse to conform to the trends as many their age (and older) seem content to do. Resonate aren’t quite their yet, but they’re easily on the right lines.
