Live CD’s are often little indication of any bands talents. On a regular basis some of the world’s best bands fall victim to poor live release tracks, simply due to venue facilities, poor mixing or one simple mistake that can stain a song for life. So, presented with Radicus Live recorded in Peterborough, I am given the impression of a young band, trying to rally support and build a reputation as well as obviously trying to draw in some funds. The fact they have supported a few signed bands in the last year is credit to them. Unfortunately this E.P doesn’t do them much justice.
In terms of attracting a few new fans and bringing it the cash to hit the studio, it may well act as a stepping stone, but in terms of making a significant impact they will need something a lot more professional. To go writing this 6 track E.P off straight down is a little unfair. It does have its plus side; it contains the back bones of some excellent songs which are short but effective and would increase my desire to seek further studio recorded material upon release. “One Sided Perspective†and “Lemming†are the pick of the bunch combing a basic punk rock influence with vocal harmonies and often well co-ordinated two way duties. Some impressive lead guitar work occasionally breaks through, but predominantly buried deep in the mix which is a shame as it would give the songs a lot more edge.
The CD ends on a track called “Boredom†which to me links to The Offspring in a huge way, particularly the build up at the start, but also in the way it is delivered vocally. This live E.P may not the impress the idea of a band on the verge of selling millions of records across the world, but it certainly is a big stamp in the right direction and further work and commitment could see an interesting bands emerge from Peterborough soon.
