Push The Ghost – Brains

By paul

I described Push The Ghost as ‘ones to watch’ last time I reviewed them and they’re proven me right. This record is really good – and I’m not just saying that as they’re from my hometown of GY. This is passionate punk rock played with heart firmly on sleeve. It’s melodic, catchy and ballsy; it could easily be straight out of the mid 90s EpiFat punk rock conveyor belt that nearly everyone who reads PT who is over 25 will have grown up on. ‘Brains’ is a vast improvement on their last EP. It’s better produced, it sounds bigger and better and the vocals are much more rounded. It was all a bit raw last time, so the band are to be handed a pat on the back for filling it out without making it too slick.

The guitar work throughout is impressive, no more so than on ‘DIY or Die In GY’ which is a real call to arms. ‘Family Tree’ lasts just over 30 seconds but is great, although my pick of the bunch is the riff-tastic ‘Keep The Youth In Music’ which sounds absolutely spot on. If you like your punk rock to be a throwback to the So-Cal skate videos you watched as a teenager, then Push The Ghost will be right up your alley.
