Pharaohs – Squashed Against My Wall

By paul

I felt the band’s last output – their first since changing their name from HPR – was a little clustered and messy. Quite clearly they’re a talented band with plenty of ideas, but it didn’t quite seem to work. Too busy, the tracks just confused themselves with too much going on. ‘Squashed Against My Wall’ isn’t exactly stripped down, but it’s much improved on the last record. It has an insanely catchy chorus, and while the choppy verses could be ripped from many other bands peddling similar wares, the song itself has such a fun, melodic side that it’s easy to let those influences pass. It’s a fun slice of sub-three minute pop music and, if this is the direction the band are heading in, I look forward to hearing some more.
