Remember the ‘now…’ series of compilation CDs? Y’know, the ones that feature 40-plus pop songs that capture a point in time. They showcased a variety of musical styles, often featuring some crazy Euro-synth dance effort alongside crusty ballads and the odd Busted-lite guitar pop tune. Well, the strangely named ‘Save Each Other, The Whales Are Doing Fine’ is a bit like a Now compilation – there are so many styles mixed up here it actually sounds like some crazy mix CD. There’s straight up pop-punk, a little ska and a lot of mainstream rock here.
Patent pending are a lot of fun – and a band perfect for a hot summer’s day – but their ultra disposable brand of poppyness is exactly that; ultra disposable. A band that has a kind of Aquabats-esque humour, they even have a track called ‘Cheer Up Emo Kid’. Oh the hilarity. And originality. ‘Decemberween’ even sounds like another song, I just can’t put my finger on which one. It’s indicative of the band as a whole, one which certainly performs with a smile on their face, but one which doesn’t really leave any lasting impact and changes their sound far too often to stick in your brain.
