The press release accompanying this disc claims the Germans are influenced by the likes of Fugazi and The Smashing Pumpkins, although my initial reaction was that they sounded like a heavier Taking Back Sunday. To be fair to Parachutes, what they do, they do pretty well. It’s just what they do was fashionable two years ago and it’s a sound dying on its arse.
While many bands of this ilk scream and shout their way through harsh guitars and crashing drums, yet lack any kind of emotion, Parachutes are heavy in the musical and emotional sense. I will emphasise the fact that they are good for what they are. But my concern with this type of music is that it’s become so heavily saturated that the good bands don’t really stand out any more. And while that’s not really the fault of Parachutes, it’s certainly had an impact on me as a reviewer. ‘And I Won’t Stop Until You’ve Lost Everything You Ever Loved’ is definitely worth checking out, although I doubt it will have the impact of a TBS in a commercial sense. Still, if they come across to the UK this summer, they’d definitely be worth seeing live.
