Our Time Down Here – Last Light

By Andy

OUR TIME DOWN HERE, are, by their own admission, ‘total fun hardcore’. While the latter part of said label may be debatable to the most tedious and nit-picking of musical fascists, there’s no disputing that there is nothing to deny the group’s notion of ‘total fun‘ -‘Last Light’ is childish, boisterous, exciting and totally unashamed of it.

Requiem‘, the opening track, is full to the brim with thrashing tomfoolery; yelled group vocals over crushing drums and fuzzed up guitar fizzes lead up to an explosion of catchy pop-punk jocularity as ‘The Midnight Hour’ takes over. Like a more edgy Paramore – albeit with less drama and more drollery or classic Blink-182 without the whiny vocals (but with a hint of the self-titled indie edge), Our Time Down Here have cultivated cheer perfectly and have managed to do so without taking themselves too seriously which is, by all accounts, no mean feat.

‘Tiny Teeth’ is raucous yet contained, striking the perfect balance between impetuous punk excitement and musically-messy chaos. Closer ‘Cloud of Dust’ is fast, fun and frivolous. Group yelps and drum rolls are stereotypical hardcore-pop territory, but there’s nothing wrong with a little textbook if it’s done right; in this case Our Time Down Here get top marks.
