one:day:life – Friends In name Only

By paul

When you start going on about a “schools tour” in your bio, as a band you should really question what you’re doing. Maybe I’ve missed the point of being in an unsigned, young band, but the last time I checked gaining a fanbase by slogging out the primary school circuit was not one of the ways to get noticed. What next, the Filaments at Grange Hill? Fair play for using some endeavour, but when you’re playing to a bunch of kiddies and their lunch money I very, very much doubt it’s going to help carve out a lasting career in the music industry. But then what would I know?

So yeah, one:day:life are about as punk rock as potato, and to be fair their music is more Simple Plan than Sex Pistols. Although with a schools tour in the bag I guess that’s hardly a surprise. So what is ‘Friends In name Only’ like? Well it’s catchy, disposable pop-punk, with the emphasis on the pop. It’s done reasonably well, is highly polished and comes in a very professional wallet. Clearly someone with a few quid is behind this band and, to be honest, I’m just really suspicious behind their motives. I very much doubt any of the band are older than 20, so I don’t understand why they don’t try and build a real fanbase first, before pandering to a bunch of fickle kids who will chew you up, spit you out and then play kiss chase in the playground.

one:day:life aren’t horrific by any means, but there are a tonne of better bands out there. A schools tour really doesn’t sit well with me and I think playing some proper sweaty venues with some real bands would toughen the band up more than playing school gyms to a bunch of pre-teens…
