I think over the course of the 1,300 reviews we’ve done for this website we have managed to cover most European countries, but I suspect this may be the first release we have received from Finland. One Hidden Frame formed in 2002 and play a fast-paced skate punk that throws me back to my youth when I was brought up on a staple diet of Pennywise and Propagandhi. This 8-tracker is fast and frenetic and very impressive – the band make good use of vocal melodies despite the fact English isn’t their first language, so although it sounds very American this kind of music is synonomous with a So-Cal feel, something OHF manage to pull off well.
From the opening strains of ‘The Doors Will Be Shut’ the band showcase a sound and skill that is easy to like. The guitars have Strung Out qualities to them while the vocal melodies soar like an eagle. ‘Time To Wake Up’ sounds a little like Millencolin if they covered Phinius Gage – lots of vocal harmonies splattered over hard hitting drums. ‘Hopes For Tomorrow’ chugs along nicely too, while the link between ‘Choices’ and ‘Home of the Brave’ is clever. If all Finnish punk rock is as good as this, it’s a scene that needs to be tapped into.
