Moros Eros – Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiosity

By paul

Honestly, I’m not quite sure what to make of Moros Eros. I’m not quite sure what I’m supposed to make of the band either. Victory has a tendency to completely stray from its usual signing path, ditching the metalcore or the Hawthorne Neights-esque sound they tend to snap up, throwing out a curveball with the likes of 1997 or, as in the past, Count The Stars. Moros Eros are a similar curveball, a band more akin to the electro-dance pop with off-kilter drums and strange time signatures. They’re more experimental than most bands around and don’t really sound pop enough to be spoken about in the same sentence as The Killers. It makes for a strange album.

And ‘Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiosity’ is a very strange 9-tracker. It’s not bad – technically this band are very good and the song structures are intriguing and interesting, so it would be wrong to dismiss them – it’s just, well, it’s not that great either. Technical proficiency is all well and good if the songs stick in your head, but I found this record tends to blend together, creating one long song rather than nine individual efforts. You could argue that is the sign of a good record, but there’s a fine line and for me the songs don’t stick out enough to warrant your full attention.

There’s a splatter of drums or a squeal of a vocal which suddenly makes you sit up and take notice, but it’s all a little odd and doesn’t quite fit. As I said, I can’t really mark the band down because they’re very proficient at what they do, it’s just possible what they do isn’t really my thing. Interesting and intriguing for those looking for a quick musical fix, but probably not a band for the long term.
