It’s been a long time since I have heard a refreshing young skate punk band, but thankfully Scotlands ‘Mistake us for Friends’ have bucked that trend by producing a highly impressive three track offering which is pretty fucking stunning. The genre is arguably a first love of mine and in the shape of these young scamps, I may have found a new love. It is only three tracks, and they are simply a teaser for a split to come later in the year on Lifeline Records, but the three tracks are upto an undeniably high standard and it reaffirms your faith with all that is bad in the world. Well music anyway.
Opening track ‘Fashioncore’ is, as you may expect, a statement on the current scene and its associated scenesters but that is simply the tip of the iceberg as alarmingly fast drumming is introduced before some extremely impressive technical guitar play takes a hold of the song as it rattles along at a blistering pace. Coupled with an explosive finish of guitar and drum solo alike, I am fucking loving this band already. Follow up track ‘Government, Not Girlfriend’ lets up a little on the onslaught but the standard is still suitably high and continues in fine style. With the feeling of wanting more high on the agenda it is a shame when final track ‘After the Fall’ rears its head and dawns the end of this all to short journey into the pride of Hamilton. The final song however proves a slight bump on the path as the vocals struggle at times with some of the higher notes, but this is looking for something not to like in a band that appeal so much.
Lets see what we have here then… Melodies? Check. Guitar shredding at its finest? Check. Strong lyrics? Check. Bright future? I certainly hope so. Mistake us for Friends are a breath of fresh air and there isn’t a mic swinger or screamer in sight. And I fucking love it.
