How can songs be in the key of fuck, exactly? I’m not entirely sure it’s possible. And in any case, are Midasuno referring to fuck in the, erm, passionate sense, or more in the angry sense? It’s difficult to gauge from the music because it’s neither aggressive or lovey-dovey…it kind of sits smartly in between the two; at times rocking the fuck out in rather a nice way, at others boring me to tears. It’s possibly why I’ve ever never really agreed with the ‘hype’ surrounding this band – I’ve heard many good things about them, yet they’ve never really kicked on. The inconsistencies which litter this record may offer up an excuse as to why that is the case.
‘Songs…’ starts off incredibly badly. If the band reversed the tracklisting I’m sure it would sound better than it actually does. Infact, three songs in and I’d really started to form an opinion that this was just plain bad. Dreary and recycled Blood brothers riffs and a vocal which doesnt seem to fit, ‘Don’t Drive’ and ‘Decent Assault’ just don’t hit the mark. But then halfway through things start to switch the other way – ‘Tooth and Fang’ shows promise, the Muse-esque guitar riffs in ‘Sleepwalkers’ end things in spectacular fashion and ‘Continental’ is sheer genius – the gang backing vox as the song comes to a close are nothing short of spectacular.
So it begs the question why this record is literally a tale of two halves? Inconsistent and poor at best, before becoming a real rockin’ beast that shows a hell of a lot of promise. It’s almost like two different bands. On the flip side, however, they’re 100 times better than labelmates Anemic – also known as the worst band in the UK (copyright PT 2007).
