I’m not sure I quite see the appeal of Lucky Boys Confusion. They’re like a slicker, more melodic Simple Plan. And while I’ll hold my hands up and profess my love for the pop-punk, I cannot stomach bands that masquerade under the genre when really they’re more pop than anything else. Even then, LBC’s tracks aren’t all that great. Sure, there are hooks and melodies and some of the harmonies are sweet as a nut, but there’s so much sugar-coating here it leaves a bit of a sour aftertaste. Not only that, but I found that after only a few listens I wasn’t really singing along – a neccessary evil for all quality melodic acts.
That’s not to say Lucky Boys Confusion aren’t catchy – they are. But I found them to be a bit too nauseating. ‘The Struggle (Getting Out Alive)’ is actually a great opener and the gang vocals are far and away the best moment on the disc. But once the track ends things start to fall down. ‘Cigarettes’ sounds like a bad Yellowcard cover circa ‘Lights and Sounds’, while other tracks tend to blend into the next. It’s all style rather than substance and, sadly, leaves little lasting impression. Summer may be with us, but the boys are more confusing than lucky for me…
