If you’re already familiar with Look Mexico, this little record is certainly one to purchase. It’s basically a 14-track collection of songs ranging from the best tracks off the ‘Crucial EP’ to covers, remixes and a couple of songs from the ‘So Byzantine’ record. It’s an odds and sods collection that isn’t really the best starting point for new listeners (‘This is Animal Music’ is best for that) but for those already in love with the band, this is pretty much essential.
For British readers, bands like The Maple State at their quirkiest are perhaps as good a reference as I could make; there are choppy guitar riffs and quirky synth parts that make the band a jaunty, chipper little affair. ‘Call Off Your Lapdog’ and ‘Guys, I Need A Hellicopter’ are both excellent, excellent songs which I would heartily recommend to anyone reading this review. And while this record becomes a little disjointed as remixes and compilation efforts drift out of the speakers, I have to admit that Look Mexico, at times, are nothing less than beautiful and one of those rare bands that sound so majestic with minimal effort. Fans need this record, others should check out the last album before this one – but it’s worth a whirl in any case.
