It takes mega balls for a band like this to send in their record for me to review. I make no bones about the fact I think this neon, nu-rave bollocks is shitter than a poo in a glass, so to send me a record that’s simply a techno-pop thing with absolutely no element of punk (or any of it’s side genres) at all is brave. Very brave.
Lipstick Revolution hail from Weymouth and claim to be ‘un-pigeon-hole-able’. They also claim to ‘bring together cheesy 90’s rave riffs, heavy guitars and stomping drums, whilst throwing in some hard hitting attitude, a punk-esque vocal delivery and a thumping driving bassline’. They’ve also shared the stage with the likes of BrokeNCYDE, Trash Fashion, Glamour For Better, YouLoveHerCozShesDead, Jeffree Star, The King Blues and My Passion. If that doesn’t give you a rough idea of what to expect…
To be fair, Lipstick Revolution do what they do to a decent standard. It’s well produced and, well, that’s about it. Sorry guys, but there’s very little I can say that’s positive. The EP just chucks in a wave of sound effects, not particularly catchy choruses and vocals which are mainly just shouted tunelessly into a mic, all mixed in with guitars, basslines, samples and anything else the band can put together. The songs all tend to go on so long and there’s way, way too much thrown into the melting pot, resulting in a messy sound that just doesn’t flow at all. Bands like Enter Shikari do this well because they are catchy. Brokencyde shock. Jeffree Star has his gimmick too. Lipstick Revolution just don’t have anything in their locker to stand out at all. Nothing’s catchy enough, the riffs aren’t heavy, the vocals not melodic enough. There’s nothing here, especially for someone who hates the genre of music, to grab on to and go ‘yeah, actually this isn’t that bad.
I’m sure they’re all really nice guys, but this is just a bad attempt at doing a bad genre of music.
