Kyra – These Precious Things EP

By paul

You don’t get too many bands coming out of the sleepy Lake District and I imagine there are even fewer that sound as noisy and angry as Kyra. This EP is a four-tracker which shows plenty of promise. As a young band they’ve done exactly what you should do and record as good an EP as you possibly can. ‘These Precious Things’ was recorded with Romesh Dodangoda who is one of the premier homegrown producers right now, so if you’re familiar with his work you will know this record sounds thick and punchy. Just as it should.

The band reference the likes of Refused, Glassjaw and Taking Back Sunday as influences, which is fair in the sense the band probably listen to all three, but I don’t think they sound like any of them. If you’re a fan of the Ferret Records stable of bands, that whole screamy/shouty post-hardcore thing, then you’ll quite enjoy this band. It doesn’t really bust down the boundaries but the boys do what they do to a solid level. The title track is aggressive and fierce and is possibly the best of the four. They are better when they push the pace a little bit, as ‘So Where Do We Go From Here?’ sounds a little slower like a sub-par Lostprophets b-side.

Still, the band are clearly on the right lines and while ‘These Precious Things’ is a little generic and similar sounding, it’s done to a good standard. If the band can progress and try and find their own little niche they could go on and do better things. Ones to keep and eye on for sure.
