Jonah Matranga – There’s A Lot In Here

By paul

This is a rather apt name for a release, because there is rather a lot here. Infact, there’s a lot here that fans of Far, Gratitude, Onelinedrawing or any other Jonah band will lap up. Released on Equal Vision, this is a DVD and CD split release which features live tracks, demos and a variety of odd, and often random, assortments. Now whether you’re a fan of Jonah or not, this is often heartfelt and meaningful, even if it’s not always essential listening.

The short version of this review should read ‘if you’re a Jonah fan, stop reading and buy this disc’. That’s the simple truth. It has everything a fan or collector needs – intimate live footage, new versions of songs and commentaries, everything you want in a DVD package and then some. Spanning old and new Jonah songs, from ‘Halo’ to ‘Lukewarm’, it’s simply a must for any fan, I really can’t stress that enough.

But for the casual music fan, it’s probably not the best starting point – although still entertaining enough for the odd watch. The living room live gig is rather odd watching – someone so well known as Jonah playing songs in a living room is bizarre, but ultimately a realisation that he is an honest and emotional chap, making his performance even more believable. Whilst some of his songs won’t be to everybody’s tastes, there can be no arguments that he has penned some absolute classics. So if you are a fan then you need to buy this record. And if you’re not? Well, check it out anyway.
