This three track demo shows a hell of a lot of promise, but doesn’t quite yet deliver. I get the impression that if JT build on this over the course of 2009, they could destroy all comers. With a sound that comes across like a rougher version of early Capdown or mid-Howards Alias, crossed with the vocals of a Biffy Clyro, JT are a groove-laden machine that mix up elements of ska, rock and punk and the results are interesting. They don’t always work – ‘A Girl Called Mary’, to me, sounds a little disjointed and doesn’t quite flow as well I would like it to – but the band are certainly on the right lines.
I’d like to hear the band mix the pace up a bit more. ‘Troubled Times’ is so much better when the band put the accelerator pedal down and this is something I’d like to see expanded upon when the band next go into the studio. For me it’s the band’s best song and it’s a style I’d like to see them experiment with.
I’m sure we’ll be hearing more of Joey Terrifying in the coming weeks and months and if they build on the obvious talent, they could become a force to be reckoned with.
