Hoppus – All or Nothing

By paul

Naming yourself after the bass player in Blink 182 is probably the shoddiest way of giving your band a moniker than anything I have ever come across. It’s therefore a surprise that Hoppus are not a very silly pop-punk band in the style of Mark, Tom and Travis. Instead, ‘All or Nothing’ is a collection of songs that sound like US ‘alternative’ crew Semisonic. Yep, Semisonic. They did that ‘Closing Time’ song that wasn’t all that bad, but after three listens it really started to grate on you.

Not only do Hoppus sound like Semisonic, they also throw in ridiculous lead riffs and on ‘Kenny’s Sundays’ manage to sound like The Darkness, despite the fact the singer actually raps. Yes, he talks very fast in a bid to rap. Then on ‘It’s Over’ they speed things up a little, thrown in some ill-timed drum beats and out of tune backing vocals, all on top of a shitty guitar riff, in a bid to sound remotely ‘punk’.

I cannot say enough bad things about this record. It’s absolutely fucking awful. Kids, if you’re in a band and you’re absolutely shit, like this lot, don’t waste 20 minutes of my life and make me review your work of ‘art’. I’d rather eat my own shit.
