Hit The Lights – Until We Get Caught

By paul

These guys are about as punk as a lollipop, so perhaps I should call them the aural equivalent of Top Shop, look up some long words on the online dictionary and then rant on about how Hit The Lights are rubbish, just because they don’t sound like The Clash.

But that would be ‘rubbish’, wouldn’t it? (Oh how I love to jibe…)

Hit The Lights are the epitome of what some of the forum users have described as ‘summer music’. It’s a brand of guitar driven pop, sure, but it sounds so fucking good when the sun is out, the world instantly becomes a better place. It’s a genre of music us Brits seem to struggle with, maybe only Fastlane have created an album loaded with as many melodies as there are here. This 5-track EP will appeal to fans of Fallout Boy and New Found Glory – it’s unashamedly pop-punk, and I’m sure the punk police will be out in force to slag it off. But I like my music to be loaded with singalong hooks and Hit The Lights have far more than most.

It is sugar-coated and saccharine sweet, especially on songs like ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ and the awesome ‘Save Your Breath‘, but this EP has the amazing ability of burrowing into your brain and taking up a permanent residence. It doesn’t re-design the world or break any new ground, but Hit The Lights have flicked the on switch and pushed all the right buttons. So to speak…
