Harvard – The Inevitable and I

By paul

Harvard are a five-piece outfit based from Charlotte, North Carolina who play a dreamy brand of indie-rock that I guess one should probably describe as ’emo’, although that’s not really a fair term for a band with far more imagination and talent for most bands associated with the genre. ‘The Inevitable and I’ is a very interesting record. It’s one that sounds brilliant as background music, creating this vast landscape with so, so much depth to it. It’s not a record I could listen to and do nothing else, it’s one of those inspiring records that makes you want to do something. It sounds huge, thanks no doubt to Brian McTernan’s production skills, meaning there’s a Circa Survive, Me Without You vibe.

What makes Harvard stand out is their vocalist and boy is the vocal used effectively on this record. It’s the standout instrument that everything else wraps around and Jesse manages to hit notes many other singers can only dream of. It makes this record sound so utterly vast and massive because this boy has serious range. Even if this mini-review doesn’t whet your musical apetite, give the band a chance purely on the talents of the frontman – Harvard deserve your ears on that facet alone.
