Geriatric Unit – Audit Of Enemies

By Tom Aylott

When the tray of a CD bears the simple message ‘Old-Fast-Loud’ and the whole theme of the artwork is old-school photocopied images and simplicity, you pretty much know what you’re gonna get. Geriatric Unit (ex-members of Iron Monkey and Heresy) play abrasive, plain up hardcore with a minimum of fuss and a lack of any pretension.

And ‘Audit Of Enemies’ definitely doesn’t fuck about. There is a lot of hate on this record. There is a lot of left-wing yet disillusioned feelings of hate. And while at times it veers towards the slightly clichéd there is a sense of true, English sincerity about the whole thing. The production is slick yet abrasive, the vocals delivered with the kind of distorted snarl that you’d expect from a new Discharge record. Some of the tracks have something quite unique about them too – not least the title track – some interesting guitar noise adds different gravy to the usual rubbery meat.

With ‘Audit…’ Geriatric Unit aren’t breaking too many musical barriers and they aren’t planting new and interesting political ideas in your head with fine rhetoric, but it’s a damn solid record – one of the best releases to come out of the Boss Tuneage offices in recent months.
