Four Letter Lie – What A Terrible Thing To Say

By paul

To say Four Letter Lie‘s last album sunk without a trace is an understatement. Mixing the best bits of Atreyu and Hawthorne Heights to a very high standard I wrote at the time of the album’s release that I felt it was inevitable the band would go supernova and make Victory some mad dollar. But as other bands like Aiden and A Day To Remember have really started to pick up the pace, for whatever reason FLL just disappeared off the radar. Until now.

The simple review here is to say that if you enjoyed the last record you will love ‘What A Terrible Thing To Say’ as it’s basically the same – catchy choruses mixed with ’emotional screaming’. The shouty vocals make this sound a little generic, but the band do it to a pretty high standard. ‘Nothing But A Ghost’ is quite Hawthorne Heights-y, while the album’s title track reminds me of a more melodic Underoath.

The problem is that Four Letter Lie pretty much sound like a slew of other bands around right now and while they don’t sound that bad, they’re probably not quite up there with the best of them. There’s the potential for a lot of kids to love this band, maybe this time they’ll get the break they need to make an impact.
