Fortune and Glory – S/T

By paul

Slip this into your player and it’s very difficult not to think of Set Your Goals. Fortune and Glory (horrible band name, sorry) is a five-piece from Wisconsin that plays melodic pop-punk with a nod towards a little heavier sound. You know, just like Set Your Goals.

This five track E.P. is a bit of an innocuous one; there’s nothing particularly bad about the record, but nor is there anything all that outstanding. It’s built-up on buzzing guitars and gang shout-alongs that go some way to creating the party-time atmosphere the band is looking for, but it just seems a little forced. The lead vocal isn’t the strongest and the sound quality isn’t anything to write home about, which means the whole thing never really gets out of second gear.

Still, at the same time it’s not exactly a chore to listen to the whole thing (at 12 and a half minutes it really shouldn’t be), and you get the sense that the band has toiled in an attempt to get a sound representive of its identity. There’s a definite hint that in a live setting the band will be a more interesting proposition.

Ultimately, there’s nothing spectacular here, just the sound of a young band failing to prick the ears but at the same time at least not tearing out the eardrums.
