First Day – Lets Escape Together EP

By

If this CD were solely to be studied on sheer infectiousness then it would gain a mark of 5 without the blink of an eye. I haven’t heard an EP this god damn catchy in a long time, and of the four tracks on display each shows a keen eye for a catchy tune. The Cambridgeshire four piece have been knocking around midlands venues now for a few years supporting the likes of Mybe, Phinius Gage and My Dad Joe, and certainly have their own brand of pop-emo-punk down to a tee and although it shows promise, it doesn’t quite cut it just yet.

‘Keep it to Myself’ opens it up in fine form and is almost hypnotic in form as it forces you to sing along to the cracking chorus while ‘The Best is Yet to Come’ follows it up in slightly less intimidating fashion but, ups the pace a notch and manages to avoid any obvious similarities to the opener. ‘ If You don’t get it now’ is arguably the dullest track on display but the rawkus ‘Still Growing’ picks it up in the correct direction with a more bitter angle and gains some much needed adrenaline come the rousing finale.

First Day excel in writing catchy melodic songs which will have the foot tapping all day long, but if they wish to up it a notch, maybe a change in the musical direction is needed. While the style of music they play is to a high level, at times it is a little to generic and loses half a mark as there are a whole host of bands doing the same thing at the moment. But other than that minor discrepancy, they cannot be faulted as the effort is clearly there and along with the frankly stunning inlay booklet (For an unsigned band anyway) it is a package you may want to check out.
