From the look of the dated 80s influenced cover, you could be mistaken for thinking Exit Avenue were totally obsessed with all things electronic. Oh wait, they are. Describing themselves as
“fusing Electronica limbs to the Pop Punk torso of a Ninja-Dragon”, they seem to have patented the genre ‘Sega-Jedi-Core++’. And while there are bands that do this kind of thing a little better, Exit Avenue are a lot of fun and show glimpses of genius. It doesn’t make them the next big thing, but it does make them a band to keep an eye on.
When Exit Avenue stick to the ‘bleep bleep’ of the synths, they come across as little better than average. But when the band really try and push their sound, throwing in some beautiful piano work on ‘Sing It Back Hunny’ and an excellent guitar riff/backing vox combo on ‘Better Off Alone’, they come across as a band going places. Of course HelloGoodbye and Encyclopedia are quite adept at throwing in crazy synth sounds and with 🙁 (colon open bracket) getting the attention of the bigger labels, there’s clearly a market for this kind of thing. Look at Enter Shikari, for instance. But Exit Avenue, while sometimes drifting down the generic line, try and push their pop-punk roots through and come out shining. You could do a lot worse than check out this 9-track EP.
