I’m assuming this lot have been lazily likened to Dillinger Escape Plan and maybe Sikth in most reviews they ever had. But they aren’t that easy to define – they are maybe closer to Raised Fist. They sit nicely at the more brutal end of the hardcore scale anyway. With that distinctive French need to make everything – bass, drums, vocals – as distorted as possible.
This is good stuff. It’s quite liberating to have a CD with no lyrics and just song titles that mostly mean absolutely nothing to me. It means the music can speak for itself. It’s not always easy to listen to, but it’s hardcore and metalcore ethics, played by punk rock fans. Just when you expect the predictable metal breakdown, they throw in some 90’s So-Cal octaves instead. Makes a change. My only criticism really is that there are too many attempts to be truly, truly brutal – blast beats and nods to Goatsblood. Nothing wrong with that, but this lot aren’t amazing at pulling it off. Still, after 5 seconds, the songs have changed to something else anyway.
French music gets a hard time a lot of the time – like so many countries on the mainland – because of the fact that there are so many English native-speaking bands people listen to first. But if you’re feeling like broadening your horizons, have a listen.
