Dugong – Quick To The City

By paul

A lot of my friends would class Dugong as their favourite UK band. Infact, if their recent final shows at the OOS weekender in Leeds were anything to go by, Dugong were a lot of people’s favourite band. Those who love the band point to their slick, melodic tunes, all topped off with a really powerful vocal delivery, as one of the major reasons why this band are so great. ‘Hat Danko’ pointed towards great things and this EP does exactly the same. However, as many times as I have listened to this, I just don’t get it as much as many others clearly do.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a good little CD. It’s almost a very good CD. But what makes this a good rather than a great record is just a certain spark – there’s just a little something missing for me to go ga-ga over. ‘Quick to the City‘ and ‘Trojan Horse’ are really strong songs, full of verve, drive and singalong hooks. But there’s something missing for me which takes this from being good to being great – and while I can’t put my finger on it, it doesn’t detract from the overall quality Dugong possess. They will be a loss to the UK scene and anyone who likes their music to be a full-on heart-on-their-sleeve style will really enjoy this. Well recommended.
