The development of music over time has resulted in an extremely fine line between punk and balls-to-the-wall hardcore. DRONES are walking this line meticulously, releasing a debut LP filled with eleven thunderous pit-inducers from either side. ‘Mutiny‘ opens with immediate barbarity that does not relinquish its grip for a short but ruthless twenty-five minutes. Not the be mistaken with the 70s punk band of the same name, this is punk at its most modern.
The Surrey based trio rely on intense time-signatures, raw and gravelly vocals and metal friendly riffs to deliver their message of social injustice. The guitar and bass help to separate the structure of the songs on offer, ensuring that the release remains engaging without losing the raw attitude. Vocally Daly George sounds exceptional, delivering each intense line with just enough measured contempt.
‘Mutiny‘ could easily be released by an established band, making the reality of three young guys from Surrey more exceptional. Taking elements from the prominent hardcore scene, DRONES always hang on to their punk-rock attitude, and deliver every note and vocal as if their integrity depended on it. Their calculated changes in sound and delivery easily add a depth that is missing from a number of similar releases making ‘Mutiny‘ is a force to be reckoned with. This debut fittingly provides the soundtrack to a revolution, and is a must-have for any self-respecting punk fan.
