Drive Like You Stole It – Frequency

By paul

OK. Now don’t laugh. Let’s just try something for a second shall we. Right, picture in your mind Biffy Clyro: those Scottish lovelies capable of the beautiful guitars one second and squalls of feedback the next, right, now
imagine what would happen if you t Canadian songstress Alanis Morissette, that pint-sized woman who played God in Dogma (and who actually you all secretly like, secretly), to sing for them… I thought I told you not to laugh.

So here are Drive Like you stole it, an altogether different band than their Plymouth counterparts Drive “IT” Like you stole it. This release, out on Undergroove, shows exactly why DLYSI have been on everybody’s “Ones to watch” lists for a while now. Mixing up a Foo Fighters melodicism with a speaker destroying love for their distortion pedals, Drive like you stole it have got to be winning friends with a debut this powerful, they’ve just got to be. Opener “Frequency” does exactly what it needs to, jagged, post-rock guitars, epic drums and thundering bass have never sounded so good. Guitarist, singer Mel Young is a blessing in herself, thank Buddha we’re getting out of this Brody Dalle rut
and thank Buddha even more that she’s British.

After wading through so many terrible, terrible bands recently it’s a joy to hear something so potent, DLYSTI have that vital, fraught quality that makes a good rock band. A cathartic and occasionally stunning debut. Granted there’s still the odd derivative moment, the band seemingly falling back onto the tried and tested ground of their obvious influences, but with songwriting this good it’s only a matter of time before DLYSI are up there in the major leagues.
