This record marries the indie cool of Wes Blaylock’s falsetto vocals with some really, really poppy melodies. And it works brilliantly. Wes uses his voice as a major, major instrument. Everything else is built around it and it’s a more than reasonable thing to do as he has the power and reach most vocalists can only dream of. It makes ‘White Lights‘ a really, really interesting listen. Tracks like ‘Undercover’ are catchy yet in not an overbearing way. They’re unlikely to make their way onto MTV anytime soon, yet will still appeal to those who like their songs to be catchy. The EP’s title track reminds me of Death Cab for Cutie crossed with the poppiness of a band such as Mae, if that makes any sense…it’s cool but catchy. And well worth a listen.
