Days Ago – Mantrap The Surveyors

By paul

Yes, I know this is a little bit late – about a year I think – but it’s still good enough to pass comment on. Norwich’s Days Ago remind me quite a lot of ‘Say Hello To Sunshine‘-era Finch crossed with early Secondsmile, especially on the likes of ‘An Evening Of Moral Issues With Bill Cosby’, a track that seems to mix everything from complete schizophrenia to a slab of emo-rock goodness in the swift shake of a plectrum.

Recorded by Mark Williams, this quartet of songs sounds pretty damn large. And that suits the music pretty fine. The Blood Brothers-gone-mental tone of ‘Jasmine’ harks back to a time when Glassjaw and Daryl Palumbo didn’t secretly harbour radio hit dreams, while the complete chaos which ensues during ‘Where No Measure Refracts’ shows the band are multi-faceted, yet good with it. So many bands nowadays are intent on mixing up their genres, throwing in some blast beats and ill-judged screams and namechecking a tonne of influential bands. But Days Ago seem to manage to do this without ever coming across as contrived or obvious, yet still have elements to their songs that are catchy and melodic. Definitely one of BSM’s more overlooked acts.
