Dawn of the Dude – International Time Travel With Magical Babes

By paul

It’s difficult to pigeonhole this band really. They’re kind of a pop-punk band in the sense they have a lot of melodies and hooks but they’re not fast enough to be pegged in with modern day bands that are more popular. They’re also very ‘rock’ in the sense I could see this on MTV or hear it on college rock radio stations in the US. They also have a trombone player which gives the band a Less Than jake feel although this mob are not a ska band at all. It’s a different mix and a difficult one to really pin down.

And that’s both a good and bad thing. The band are good in the sense no-one else really sounds like them and tracks like ‘Brittany Kaiser’ and ‘Sports Bar All Stars’ are chirpy and chipper tunes. But then there’s so much going on there’s a little identitiy crisis here too. They’re a slower, less fun Zebrahead at times. It’s that kind of good time party music but not quite as fun as you’d like them to be. Bowling For Soup with brass? ‘Earthquake’ and ‘Lovers Lane’ are also good songs and you can’t deny Dawn of the Dude (terrible name by the way) aren’t capable of writing a tune. But for me something major’s missing from making this band a really, really good prospect.
