Daughters – Canada Songs

By

Where to begin this review… I don’t know. It is possibly the strangest, yet altogether most incoherently genius CD I have ever listened to. We have fourteen songs. The CD lasts fifteen minutes. The longest song lasts a mere 1.53. And that song is called ‘The Ghost with the Most’. This CD is the most brutal fifteen minutes I have heard in a very long fucking time. It is hardcore music played at its most intense and thunderous, as the “songs” are rattled off in quick succession, leaving you barely any time to take in what has just come before you in the battle for biggest head fuck. If you are not the slightest bit intrigued, then I suggest you go else where for your music fix, if you want to know more, then by all means read on.

Opener ‘Fur Beach’ starts off in a manor you may expect of a hardcore/metal band, as it builds into a cacophony of drums, high pitched guitars and screeching vocals and nothing really changes on ‘Jones from Indiana’ either as it continues in the same vein with some absolutely blistering breakdowns and intense drumming. Next up is ‘I slept with the Daughters and all I got was this lousy song written about me’. Ah yes, I forgot to mention the song names, as 90% of them are pretty fucked up and you can’t help but laugh. As you will see they have an eye for the more surreal and this is portrayed to a point of perfection within their music. The aforementioned track is yet another that sticks to the same formula that works so well while not a lot else really changes as the album goes on. ‘And then the c.h.u.d.s came’ and ‘Mike Morowitz, the fantasy fuck’ continue this adventure of epic proportions while you simply listen in disbelief at what is going on with this intriguing five piece.

If there is a fault to be told of this record, it is dreadfully short. The aforementioned ‘Ghost with the Most’ is one of the most impressive tracks on show as it lulls you into a false sense of security which is rarely seen on the record as most of the time you feel assaulted from what is going on around you. It all ends with four previously released tracks in the form of ‘Hello assholes’, ‘Flattery is such a bunch of fucking bullshit’, ‘A room full of hard-ons and nowhere to sit down’ and ‘My stereo has mono and so does my girlfriend’.

I tend to be very particular about the hardcore music I enjoy, it is one of the genre’s I am most fussiest in and it has to be played well to really capture my imagination. Shai Hulud and Since by Man caught my attention in 2003 and while Daughters are very different to those previously mentioned it is they who have hit the ground running in 2004. This will not be to everyone’s taste, but fuck it, try it, cause you may well love every second of it.
