dan.ed.will – Can’t Help Being Sexy Demo/EP

By paul

Am I too picky with vocals in reviews? I’m not sure. Because it’s all I can concentrate on when listening to Dan.Ed.Will‘s EP here. Bassist/singer Will Quick does fairly well when he’s singing verses which he’s doing at a lower pitch, but obviously struggles when it comes to raising himself for the obligatory pop-punk chorus. It’s the only significant downside of what is a decent demo effort.

The 3 songs themselves are nicely put together; simple progressions but done competently and with a nicely British flavour, carefully tiptoeing between provincial and catchy in terms of the vocals and with some promising guitar hooks thrown in for good measure. Perhaps one or two more surprises would have been nice in the songs – an unexpectedly heavy riff, or perhaps a change the style of vocal delivery, but what’s there is decent.

In terms of improving, as said, I think the vocals need assessing. Concentrate on the lower pitch style and develop that or train the higher stuff a little more before deploying it in full force. I’m sure the band are aware of this situation and will be contemplating solutions for their next release which, if coupled with a decent producer, could be a nice surprise. Not too bad at all.
