After a little slice of summery, female-fronted pop-punk that it can be cool to like? Look no further than Cruiserweight then, a band who have been around for a while but have never really taken off. If this three-track digital only EP is anything to go by, that may change. Like Zolof The Rock and Roll Destroyer without any kind of slapstick humour, Cruiserweight pen gorgeous little pop songs that stick in your head for hours and hours after you’ve stopped listening. Lead track ‘Balboa’ is an anthem-in-waiting, a joyful chunk of melodies and harmonies, a trait the band display on a number of occasions during this brief EP.
‘Sustainer’ is slightly slower but just as fun, while the record is rounded off with a cover of Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ which is done quite impressively. While it can be quite difficult to make an impression during the course of three songs, Cruiserweight certainly leave their imprint. The future is very bright indeed.
