Wall of noiiiiiiiiiiiiise!
Ahem. Chang Ffos are an interesting proposition. Introducing something which sounds like a stoner’s wet dream is a difficult task, but I’ll give it a go. CF combine the heaviness of Converge with bass lines which remind me (in parts) of QOTSA’s first album, covered with superfluous lashings of Scandinavian metallic weirdness. Relentless and overly distorted guitars give a nightmarish feel to proceedings and vocals are frequently drawn out to the limits of their frontman.
Still, I respect the obvious experiments going on here. Tempos and time signatures are changed like socks, but the common theme is that the overtly dreary and almost lifeless sound which permeates every orifice is designed to pierce you at every opportune moment. Perhaps it works better when listened to from within the confines of a Scandinavian border. Who knows.
Chances are, if this is your sort of thing you’ll already have heard of it. If it is your thing, there’s enough variation to be content with, but speaking from a purely neutral reviewing standpoint it’s a difficult beast to assess. Overall, this is definitely an acquired taste. And, I’m afraid, I haven’t quite acquired it.
