Chĕ – Somewhere New

By paul

Every time I’ve seen Worcester’s Che, I’ve been impressed. Actually, I’ve been more impressed every time I’ve seen them. The last time was about 9 months ago and I remember being floored by some of the guitar work, which was insanely good. Vocalist Lydia has always had a strong vocal presence, but now the musicianship stands shoulder to shoulder with the frontwoman and is just as good. Two of the three tracks here are excellent – one is good – proving the band could easily be going places. They have elements of bands like Incubus in their sound, especially in the guitars, but it’s the overall sense of melody and their strong choruses which sets the band apart from many of their peers.

The lead track from the trio on offer here, ‘Somewhere New’, is an absolute belter. Lydia‘s vocals are strong and catchy, but it’s the lead guitar parts which wander around creating a really atmospheric, yet beautiful, sound. ‘Headrush’ is even better with a powerful, punchy riff. I think it’s the best song the band have penned yet. ‘Anti-Clockwise’, for me, is their weakest moment and the most obvious Incubus comparison – even the vocals do some Brandon Boyd-esque warbles! That said, it’s still strong and will help the band improve their reputation no end. This is an impressive three-tracker from start to finish and one which will improve their reputation no end.
