Five reasons why you should listen to Captured:
1. They do an old-skool punk thing, completely DIY, quite well. It’s refreshing to hear a band that does something without being pretentious or singing about girls.
2. The drums are really well performed, although maybe a little too high in the mix.
3. ‘Leave On A High’ and ‘Early Years’ have stellar choruses that were made for you to sing along.
4. The production is very good for this type of music – it feels very natural and has a ‘garage’ feel.
5. I couldn’t think of a fifth one – sorry!
Five reasons why you shouldn’t venture into the world of Captured:
1. One of the guitarist’s only seems to know three chords – and the same trio appear in every track. The lead guitarist is much better mind.
2. All the songs tend to sound a bit the same – the first time I listened to this I was doing something else and it didn’t really grab my attention.
3. They dress like Rancid circa ‘Out Come The Wolves..’ – I don’t know if that’s better or worse than scarves and t-shirts.
4. The album’s title-track sounds like a Box Car Racer song and has an awful, awful spoken word thing going on. Yuk.
5. The lyrics are a little…erm…juvenile. Which is worrying as the lead singer (and I assume songwriter) is nearly 30.
All in all, this is pretty good for what it is, but it ain’t gonna change the world…
